What is DPF?

Diesel engines are known for their power and efficiency, but also their clean-burning performance. And a big reason for that cleanliness is the Diesel Particulate Filter, or DPF. So, what is DPF? It’s a filtration system that removes harmful emissions from the atmosphere, so you can enjoy cleaner air in Ft. Lauderdale and Riviera Beach! Take a closer look at your DPF system with Rechtien International Trucks, and find out more from our experts at Rechtien International Trucks.

What is a DPF Filter?

We’ve touched briefly on what does DPF stand for, so what is a DPF filter? As you drive through Ft. Pierce, your engine produces exhaust gasses. Those gasses would simply pass along into the atmosphere if not for the DPF system. Instead, the Diesel Particulate Filter traps the soot in place. The soot is then burned in a process known as “regeneration.” This converts the soot into carbon dioxide, which greatly reduces pollutants.

DPF System Regeneration

So, what is a DPF system? While the DPF filter grabs hold of soot and stores it, the DPF system as a whole takes care of the disposal of these pollutants. As we mentioned above, the process is called “regeneration.” Regeneration occurs when the DPF filter becomes clogged with soot. The DPF system raises the exhaust temperature, essentially cooking off the soot until it burns away completely. There are two primary ways to do this:

  • Passive Regeneration: When you maintain a steady speed on the highways for 45 minutes or more, the passive regeneration system will use this heat to burn away soot.
  • Active Regeneration: If you mainly do short trips around , the DPF system will use extra fuel to get the regeneration process going instead.

Is My DPF Filter Clogged?

Sometimes your DPF system doesn’t activate automatically, and you’ll need to visit a service center for a process called “forced regeneration.” This will bring your filter back to normal. If you have an active regeneration system, your truck might flash a warning light that your filter is clogged before beginning the process. Either way, we recommend checking your filter from time to time and removing excess ash with a compressed air machine as part of routine maintenance.

Here are some signs that your filter is clogged.

  • Acrid exhaust smell
  • Cooling fans engaged
  • Change in engine sound
  • Slightly reduced efficiency
  • Deactivation of automatic stop/start
