In Florida, a commercial vehicle is defined by the DMV as “any vehicle which is not owned or operated by a governmental entity, which uses special fuel or motor fuel on the public highways, and which has a gross vehicle weight of 26,001 pounds or more, or has three or more axles regardless of weight.” If you own and operate a vehicle in the South Florida area that fits the above criteria, you need to register it with the state of Florida (or whichever state you operate the vehicle in), and you need a Commercial Driver’s License. 

So, how much does it cost to register a commercial truck? The fee to obtain or renew a Commercial Driver’s License in Florida is $75.00. The cost of registering a commercial vehicle in Florida varies based on a few different factors, including the size and type of vehicle you’re registering. Here is the full list of fees:

3-Axle Commercial Vehicles

• Truck/Tractor: $588.10
• Semi Trailer: $21.10 
• Combination: $609.10 

5-Axle Commercial Vehicles

• Truck/Tractor: $995.10 

• Semi Trailer: $21.10 
• Combination: $1,016.10

Commercial Vehicle Registration Process

Now that we’ve gone over the cost of registering a commercial truck or semi-trailer, let’s go over what you can expect from the registration process. If you want to register a commercial vehicle in Florida, here’s what you’ll need to do:

1. Make sure your vehicle falls under the definition of a commercial vehicle, as discussed above.
2. Apply for a USDOT number. Florida is one of many states which require that commercial drivers obtain a USDOT number, which is defined as “a unique identifier when collecting and monitoring a company’s safety information acquired during audits, compliance reviews, crash investigations, and inspections.” You can apply for a USDOT number here.
3. Obtain and fill out an initial registration form. In order to get this form, you’ll need to bring the following materials: registration renewal notice or vehicle identification number, proof of Florida property damage liability, and proof of insurance. Your local DMV office will be able to give you more information.
4. Pay the registration fees outlined above.

Registering a Semi-Trailer in Other States

If you own and operate a semi-trailer in a state other than Florida, your registration fee is different. Like Florida, most other states charge a flat fee for semi-trailers, unlike the weight-based fees for trucks and tractors. • California: $28 flat fee plus $39 for 2,000 pounds to $1,016 for over 15,000 pounds.
• Georgia: $12 flat fee.
• Louisiana: Flat fee. $10 per semitrailer.
• Michigan: Empty weight. $17 for 500 pounds or less to $39 for over 1,500 pounds.
• Missouri: Flat fee. $7.50 per semitrailer.
• North Carolina: $10 per semitrailer.
• Pennsylvania: $6 for 3,000 pounds or less to $12 for 10,000 pounds. $27 flat fee for over 10,000 pounds.
• Tennessee: $50 per semitrailer. Permanent registration.
