Semi-Trailer Buying Tips: What to Look For

Before starting your semi-trailer search, you’ll need to answer the age-old question: Should you buy new or used? New trailers have significant advantages, such as high-quality construction, easily researchable specs and compatibility guides, and inspection guarantees that ensure they’re up to code. But all these features come at a price. New trailers are a significant investment, one that some owners and operators can’t swing when starting their Ft. Pierce business venture.

On the other hand, pre-owned trailers can have a significant value-to-cost ratio, provided you do your due diligence. When buying a trailer on the used market, buyers should consider:

  • Compatibility: Always double-check that the used trailer you’re interested in is compatible with your semi-truck and the cargo you plan to haul.
    • Maintenance/Inspection: Ask the seller why they’re getting rid of the trailer and, if possible, for its maintenance history. You’ll also need to check that the trailer has a current Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) inspection.
    • Tires/Brakes: Tires are a great indicator of the overall quality of the trailer, as well as how well it’s been maintained. Check for uneven tread, embedded objects, or bulges on the sidewalls, as they may all be indicative of larger issues with the body and chassis. Also, check the brakes for fraying wires or unusual wear and tear.
    • Lights/Electrical: Test all the lights on the trailer, checking for dead spots or burnt bulbs. As you do, inspect all the electric wiring for any cuts, fraying, or extreme wear.
    • Structural Components: Using the help of a friend and a flashlight, do a thorough inspection of the structural body of the trailer. Is the undercarriage covered in rust? Are there any cracks where the slider rails are welded to the cross members? Climb inside the trailer and have a friend seal the door to check for any holes in the body. If purchasing a refrigerated trailer, test its functionality and look for additional wear.

How Much Does a Semi-Trailer Cost?

If you’ve used all the semi-trailer buying tips to find a trailer you’re interested in, you’re next step will be negotiating a price. How much does a semi-trailer cost? That will depend on several factors, both for new and used trailers, such as:
