Truck Emergency Kit Supplies

Most truck drivers carry the basics with them during their South Florida travels, jumper cables, a flashlight, and spare batteries. But, what other tools should you store away in your cab? Think about small items that are easily packable, but highly useful in a crisis. Here are a few recommendations for your truck emergency kit:

  • Safety flags and hazard warning signs — If you need to stop on the side of the road, a set of flags or warning signs will help alert other drivers to steer clear.
  • Tool kit — Pack a basic tool kit with multipurpose tools like screwdrivers, pliers, a box cutter, wrenches, duct tape, fuses, and spare headlight bulbs.
  • Breaker bar — A breaker bar can save you time and effort when changing a blown tire. The breaker bar offers more torque than a socket, and you can also use it to knock rocks and debris free from your truck.
  • Tire pump — Just like a set of jumper cables, a tire pump is an absolute must-have accessory for any travel. Models with built-in pressure gauges and flashlights are even more versatile in an emergency situation.
  • Snow chains — If you don’t want to slow down for the snow and ice, snow chains will keep you moving steadily. Size them according to the drive wheels of your truck to maximize your traction. Just remember that laws vary from state to state regarding snow chains so be sure to double-check local laws before you start using them on the job.

Personal Emergency Supplies

Not only should you think about your truck when packing your semi truck emergency kit, but also yourself. What if you’re stranded during a blizzard? What if you get an injury while on the road? Take a look at what truck drivers carry in their winter emergency kit:

  • Socks, a hat, and gloves — If something happens to your truck in the winter, you can lose heat incredibly quickly. Stash a warm hat, extra pair of socks, and waterproof gloves at minimum. You can even keep a warm winter outfit in storage if you drive frequently in cold climates.
  • Non-perishable food — Granola bars, nuts, and dried fruit will stay good for months and they provide lots of nutrients. Be sure to rotate your supply every six months or so.
  • Bottled water — We recommend keeping several liters of water on hand just in case you get stranded somewhere remote.
  • Thermal sleeping bag or blankets — If you have to spend the night in your truck, thermal camping gear will keep you warm and comfortable until morning.
  • Medication — If you take medication, keep an extra supply on hand. Check the expiration date and rotate your supply as needed.
  • Emergency contacts — Keep a copy of important phone numbers in your glovebox. If your phone runs out of batteries, you’ll have a backup.
  • First-aid kit — A basic first aid kit can help you in case of cuts and scrapes, and it can give you extra peace of mind on the road.
